Outline of PhD thesis

The first part of my thesis will argue that architectural design processes can be described adequately using a pragmatic approach. This is not a new idea, and in fact is probably what most descriptions of actual processes attempt to do. But most descriptions avoid some very pertinent issues of elucidation and definition. I define the criteria for an activity to be a design activity in the light of the pragmatic approach.

The second part is to examine the working practices of architects for evidence of the kinds of design activities that proceed from the definition in the first part of the thesis. I describe, discuss and classify the design activities I find.

The third part is to model the design activities identified in the second part, using the types and constructs of Tom Addis’s Clarity software to represent the different classifications of design activity.

Each part of the thesis has its problems, and I have begun by studying some of the immediate problems of definition.
