Świnoujście

I lived in Swinoujscie for four years, through the pandemic. It’s is a beautiful place that’s in the process of being destroyed. It’s on an island whose forests are paradisal, lakes magnificent, the Baltic refreshing, and the old town characterful. It’s very popular with Germans and is the most expensive place in Poland.

Most people seem to live on what someone in the UK would spend on a night out. We weren’t quite that poor but we didn't spend much on food. We had an allotment where we grew beans, radish and lettuces and ate weeds that taste like spinach, and got mushrooms from the forest. I went fishing but I got mostly small perch that were hardly worth the trouble. The weather was garbage, not really North Dordogne. Swinoujscie is apparently aspiring to be the Baltic Riviera... don't believe them. There's a north wind that freezes your eyeballs in the winter and sends chills down your spine in July.
